Struggling with Marketing? This may be why.

A year ago, as I was exiting my car, I saw an older man at my apartment complex trying to climb up a flight of stairs. He was holding 4 bags of heavy-looking groceries and was leaning on the railing while trudging up 3 flights of steep stairs. He kept falling over, and it was clear that he was in pain and that he needed help.
So I walked through the grass and up a few steps toward him, offering my help.
“Hi sir, do you need help carrying your groceries up the stairs?”
“No, but thank you, young man. I can get it.”
…And I watched as he trudged up the stairs once more, continuing to fall over.
At one point, I thought he was going to tip backward from how much swaying he was doing.
I walked back to my car, with guilt eating me away. I could have helped, but he didn’t want it.
And he kept climbing alone.
I never saw him again.
A year later, I volunteered for NESA. A non-profit organization that focuses on getting senior citizens help with their groceries.
I buy food and essentials at the store.
I bring them comfort and conversation.
And I carry their groceries upstairs.
These people want and need my help.
And I want to help them.
But these senior citizens wouldn’t have gotten
help had they ignored the problem.
Had they just sat at home and gotten it themselves, struggle and all… no solution would’ve been found.
Honestly, this makes me think of business owners.
A lot of us are stubborn.
Certain that we can make it work without help.
But that will lead to your downfall.
Let me explain.
The Silent Struggle
As a business owner, you’re expected to carry a lot:
Keep the business profitable
Manage your team
Deliver a great product or service
And somehow… also become a full-time marketing expert
Most business owners aren’t marketers by trade. But because marketing is loud and messy and confusing — and because the stakes feel high — you just push through and keep going.
Even when you’re overwhelmed.
Even when someone offers to help.
Even when you need help.
Just like the old man I tried to help a year ago…
You keep climbing.
But here’s the truth:
Running your business in silence doesn’t make your business grow.
It makes you more fatigued as a business owner, burnt out, and eventually… stuck.
Leadership Means Knowing When to Ask
Marketing — especially today — is complicated. What worked last year might not work now. What worked for your competitor may not fit your brand at all. And doing “a little bit of everything” often leads to a whole lot of nothing.
If you’ve been hesitant to get help with your marketing — whether it’s strategy, content, ads, or conversions , let this be your sign:
Ask.
Delegate.
Accept help when it’s offered.
Don’t be like the old man who trudged up the stairs, falling over constantly.
Ask for help, and climb even quicker.
Final Thought
The man on the stairs may have made it up that day…
But what did it cost him?
• Time
• Struggle
• Possible injuries

Get help.
