Stop Relying on Gurus

There are so many other options to learn from.

The other day, I was talking to my parents while on a road trip to see some family.

We were chatting about college, work, and me possibly going for a master’s degree once I finish my bachelor’s next year.

And it got me thinking:

“Maybe I should go for a master’s. I do enjoy marketing a lot. And it’d help me get a better job or build a better business later on.”

And so, I messaged one of my cousins who was pursuing an MBA as of right now, to ask her how it was going.

Know what she said?

“It’s great, but tbh I went into it because getting a job with a bachelor’s degree alone is almost impossibleeee. Plus, it gives me a chance to learn more and get a better job later.”

And, honestly, I agree.

I don’t know about some of you, but I’ve learned like 1,000 times more in college than I did taking online courses.

While online courses are great, a good portion of the time, they aren’t the full story and are just a watered-down version of what they learned in college.

That’s not to say that college is the end all be all and that online courses suck.

No, that’s not what I’m getting at.

I’m saying:

As you learn more about marketing and business, look for different resources to learn from!

Most of us are in the e-commerce space right?

So we all see the gurus on Twitter, IG, and YT, spewing all their knowledge, which can be easy to just wholeheartedly believe.

And while I don’t deny a lot of them are helpful, there are better alternatives.

For instance…

Gurus are the ones who introduced me to the world of digital marketing. And I’m forever grateful to them for that. But I found that not many of them were teaching HTML or SEO.

So you know what I did?

I learned HTML in college and I learned SEO on Coursera.com. (Great website, def check it out.) I didn't just rely on gurus, college, or Coursera.

I found different resources for different learning areas. And that’s the great thing about the internet. If you can’t find one thing, look elsewhere.

Gurus aren’t the end-all be-all.

Speaking of which…

I teach and write for e-commerce businesses who want to sell through their email marketing.
