Why Most Advertising Doesn't Work

Lately, there’s been something on my mind.
Stress.
It’s something that affects me and everyone else in the world on a daily basis. But lately, I’ve felt stress hitting me with a brick. (Not like a brick. With a brick.) Why? Because I’m terrified. Me and my girlfriend are moving apartments soon, and the fees are enormous! Seriously. Might as well buy a house. My girlfriend is applying to a few medical schools which is also expensive. And I need to find a better job. Fast.
So because of this stress stacking up, my girlfriend and I have been arguing. It started with small stuff like “you left the air fryer on the counter.” Then it ramped up to “you’re always busy.” Just petty stuff. I’ll admit, at first I thought it was both of our faults. She’d say something, I’d get mad, and she’d get mad. But it wasn’t until I tried something called Homework For Life (a method for remembering stories, where you write down one big moment that happened to you each day) that I realized this…
I was the problem.
After writing down little moments here and there, it helped me look at the situation from an outside perspective. And I saw the reality of the situation. Every time we argued, it was me that got annoyed first. I was the one stressed out and throwing my stress into our conversations.
So I changed this the next day.
And whaddyaknow… The arguing stopped. Now, believe it or not, most business owners have this exact problem. They look at their advertising that isn’t working like it’s their baby. And they argue with it. “Why aren’t you working!? It must be because the audience is just stupid!” And they blame everyone but themselves.
They’re too close. Too invested in their ad.
If they were to just take a look at the ad from an outside perspective, or get someone else to take a look, they’d realize that it isn’t the audience that’s the problem. It’s (most of the time) the ad itself.
