My Daily Copywriting Routine

Most people believe copywriting is an art.

That you can just poof your writing into existence and sell instantaneously.

But sadly, that’s just NOT the case.

Copywriting is a cross between science and art.

And if you're a freelancer in anything that's related to the art of digital marketing, then there are a few principles you need to know in order to sell effectively…

Things like:

⦾ Be specific.

⦾ Read copy aloud.

⦾ Focus on the reader.

But there are also times when you can just go willy-nilly…

⦾ Tell stories.

⦾ Be creative.

⦾ Add humor.

In my daily copywriting routine (that I used to earn 5 figures), I find the best of both worlds and turn it into a nice, quick routine where I’m learning something, applying, and improving, all in just one 5 AM morning.

So, that being said…

Here’s the routine that’ll make you millions as a freelance copywriter:

  1. Read.

The first thing I do in the morning is read a book for 15–20 minutes.

This will usually be a copywriting book, but on any given day, it must be a book that will ‘level up’ my skillset.

This does 2 things:

  1. Teach me more about copywriting

  2. Get me into a copywriting state of mind

Because after I’m in the right state of mind I…

2. Write.

Next, I get out a sales page, ad, or email from my (physical) swipe file.

I set a timer on my Apple Watch, grab a pen from the white table in my kitchen, and start hand-copying the ad for about 30 minutes.

This has, by far, been one of the most helpful activities in my routine.

Because its gotten me to understand how copywriters & marketers think about selling. I'm not just writing what I think will work.

If you try nothing else, at least try this.

3. Annotate.

Next, I’ll go and annotate an ad.

This can be the one I just handwrote, or a different one.

Either way, I get out my highlighter and start studying the dickens out of the ad. This helps me see an overview structure for how these professional advertisements work and helps me apply that to my own copy.

Finally, after all that…

4. Incubate.

I rest.

Yep. Rest is an important part of memory. And so, after studying, reading, and annotating, I need to give my brain a break.

I do this by:

⦾ Walking outside

⦾ Journaling

⦾ Meditating

This is to help my brain “digest” the information it just took in. Plus, when my brain isn’t rested, I write the worst copy in the history of mankind, so there’s that too.

After I rest, I go through my day.

And that’s it!

If you’d like to see more freelance copywriting tips just like this and you don’t have the time to read 50 articles or take $500 courses, then I have a FREE e-book for you that you can complete in 1 hour.

It’s jam-packed with value, for the price of $0.

Wanna grab it?
